Here’s the 2nd major decision by President Obama that turned me into a member of the loyal opposition. On Monday March 9, 2009 he signed an executive order to reverse the ban on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research.
This issue was and still is a political football. Pro-life supporters oppose embryonic stem cell research because embryos are destroyed and killed in the process. Also, nearly all of the real progress and breakthroughs in stem cell research have come through the use of adult stems cells which do not require the destruction of live embryos.
However, those who support abortion rights are heavily invested in embryonic research as an issue and demanded that the Bush executive order be overturned. The Bush order didn’t stop private embryonic research, only federally funded programs.
There were already embryonic research programs in place in the UK and in California that were apparently making little progress compared to their adult stem cell counterparts. So this is really nothing but a another Obama political decision rewarding his far leftist friends.
Why force millions of taxpayers who oppose the killing of embryos to contribute their hard earned tax money to support this abomination? To spend money that we don’t have on this divisive research In the midst of a severe recession is unconscionable.
Worse yet–President Obama made the following statement while preparing to sign the new executive order:
“Our government has forced what I believe is a false choice between sound science and moral values. …It is about ensuring that scientific data is never distorted or concealed to serve a political agenda- and that we make scientific decisions based on facts, not ideology.”
But who is really following science in this case? All of the real progress in the last several years has been made through use of adult stem cells. Private money has poured into adult stem cell research because of the positive potential.
Nevertheless, President Obama and his pro-abort friends insist that in the midst of a major recession that federal money must be spent on the losing side and then have the audacity to claim the scientific high ground?
Who is really following science in this case and who is pushing a political agenda? Is it just me or is anyone else out there already tired of Pres. Obama’s sanctimonious proclamations?
