President Obama the other day refused to answer questions about the Somali pirate standoff in the Indian Ocean. But a number of facts have filtered through. First of all, the President continues to get hourly updates on the situation which does indicate that he is far more involved than the administration admits. Secondly, the FBI seems to be in charge.

The Navy is standing down with their destroyer nearly a mile from the pirates boat where the Captain of the Maersk Alabama continues to be held for ransom. Yesterday the Captain tried to escape from the pirates but apparently received no help at all from the US Navy and was re-taken.

This whole scenario calls into question the strategy in play. Have the Naval forces been instructed not respond? If the US ship was closer and had sharpshooters trained upon the pirates, then the Captain probably could have made good on his escape and the whole incident would have been over. Obviously the FBI is in charge and not the Navy–and exactly how did the FBI which is a domestic police agency get involved unless the President ordered them to?

What next, are the pirates going to get their rights read to them and be allowed to lawyer-up? Nothing like this ever happened while Bush was President because they knew that the Navy and the Seals would probably be turned loose. But now we have a Harvard-trained lawyer in charge who–guess what–thinks just like a lawyer–go figure.

I can just see the memos flying out to the Navy with instructions maybe like the following:

“STAND BACK, STAND DOWN–LET THE FBI DO THEIR JOB– DO NOT SHOOT–DO NOT VIOLATE THE CIVIL RIGHTS OF THE PIRATES–DO NOT HARM THEM OR KILL THEM”.

We are now part of a softer and kinder America. Unfortunately this means that we will see more of the same–the pirates and all the terrorists are celebrating today—the Eagle has lost its talons. It’s 9/10/01 all over again!
